Kennel Cough (Bordetella Bronchiseptica) is the main cause of infectious bronchitis in dogs and is not purely a kennel related disease. Infection is airborne and spread anywhere dogs come into close contact. (e.g. Boarding Kennels, Shows or Training Classes). Dogs
can remain infectious for up to three months after their own symptoms
have passed. It
is highly contagious causing a harsh , dry hacking cough which can last
for several weeks. This can be accompanied by a high temperature causing
the dog to feel distressed and off-colour. Infectious
Bordetella Bronchiseptica is a bacterium which not only causes disease
in its own right but can further complicate viral infections and leave
the dog vulnerable to other infections or illness. Puppies
and older dogs are particularly vulnerable. It
is for this reason that most vets recommend and reputable kennels insist
on vaccination against this unpleasant disease prior to entering kennels. |
